An Interior Designer works with clients to determine the best use of space based on aesthetic choice and structural integrity. They help to make building interiors beautiful, functional, and safe. They help with selecting lighting, colors, materials, and other essential and/or decorative elements.
While interior decorators mostly focus on the visual aspect of a room, Interior
Designers rethink the space distribution, as well as its practicality and organization.
Some of the work of an Interior Designer resembles that of an Interior Architect, as it has more to do with construction work rather than aesthetical embellishments; meaning Interior Designers have to understand and comply with all current and applicable building codes.
Interior Designers are mostly known for their residential and commercial work, but they also intervene in all kinds of interior spaces where their expert insight is needed. Their expertise also expands to include building renovation design, facades, outdoor living areas and landscape design elements.
Here is the order we typically follow:
- Meet with the client to determine the client’s goals and requirements for the project scope
- Consider how the space will be used and how people will move through the space
- Prepare preliminary design concept plans including electrical and partition layouts and finishes
- Specify materials and furnishings and fixtures, such as lighting, furniture, wall finishes, flooring, and plumbing fixtures
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical and structural engineers, as necessary.
- Prepare computer (CAD) drawings for construction, building permits and for competitive bids from contractors
- Oversee construction and coordinate with building contractors to implement the plans and specifications for the project as specified
- Visit the site during construction to see that the drawings are followed, to deal with unforeseen issues and after the project is complete, to ensure that the client is satisfied.
