Spending more time at home, during the COVID shutdown, Lex and Susan
Parker had time to consider the new wood fence built last year between
their house and their neighbour. After a year, when the fence was given a
coat of grey stain to match their house, they considered it too plain and
uninteresting. After a few hours of design consideration, they decided to
paint blocks of colour in a Mondrian inspired pattern.
Lex chalked out a pattern and headed to the Benjamin Moore store to buy
some rolls of masking tape and small cans of black, yellow, white and blue
exterior paint. Alexis Parker volunteered to do the painting. Lex used
masking tape to outline black borders and areas of colour. They included
an additional dark grey stain that had also been applied to the house
exterior. After two days of masking, striping, stripping, adjusting and
painting, the fence was complete.
Now the fence is a colourful backdrop for all seasons.
Piet Mondrian, 1872 – 1944, was an important leader in the development
of modern abstract art. Mondrian used the simplest combinations of straight
lines, right angles, primary colours, and black, white, and gray. The
resulting works possess an extreme formal purity that embodies the artist’s
spiritual belief in a harmonious cosmos. The influence of his paintings can
be seen in lots of other things – from furniture to fashion!
